I've been watching White Christmas again with greater regularity now as it is almost December. As I watched it last week, I keyed in on the opening scene where General Waverly gets up on stage (the fact that they have a piano, bass drum, Christmas tree complete with decorations and a winter scene backdrop right there at the front lines is a topic for another post. . .). He being a man and all, feels embarrassed by his emotion at leaving his command and freezes mid-stair. Luckily, Bing and Danny have foreseen and planned for just such a contingency and proceed with their "slam-bang" finish. For some reason, a jaunty march-like tune and his entire division singing his praises puts the general at ease and will all traces of embarrassment gone, he makes it down the stairs, through the crowd and to his jeep.
So, I'm seriously considering trying this exit strategy sometime. The next time I find myself in that awkward position of needing to leave and not knowing how to gracefully wrap it up and get out, I might just pull out my phone and play some loud catchy music. I can see it now - greeting a group of friends who then change topic while visiting with other members of the group with whom I'm totally unconnected. . . then Bam! "There she goes, there she goes again" comes blaring from my back pocket as I coolly and confidently stroll away. I have to say, I'm sorely tempted to try this one. Any other good exit strategies from the movie that you're dying to try out? I'd love to hear them.
